If the Shoe Fits, Wear It–or Don’t: Transitioning to Barefoot Running

Most avid runners will describe their chosen sport as liberating, challenging, a great way to commune with nature and, most of all, simplistic in its equipment requirements. One can just don a pair of high-quality running shoes and hit the open road. Or might it be even easier than that? In recent years, a debate has begun to surface regarding the most optimal choice of footwear when running.

Taking Nature’s Route to Getting “Pumped” with NO

We’re all familiar with that guy in the gym–the one who spends as much time posing and admiring his physique in the mirror as he does lifting weights. He knows that the “pump” he achieves while training is ephemeral, merely a function of temporarily increased blood flow, and not the instant addition of true muscle mass.

Facts on Fat

Fat often gets a bad rap, and sometimes, rightly so. It is essential for many bodily processes, yet, like just about anything else, too much can be a bad thing.

Strength Training for Children and Adolescents

Many parents focus on helping their child reach their full academic potential, with tutoring, homework, and structure.  Children have an athletic potential as well that is often overlooked, or taught that team sports alone will help them reach it.  While I don’t discount the importance of learning teamwork, team sports alone will not help a child reach that potential.  If they excel at a sport or sports, getting them involved early in strength and conditioning training can mean the difference between playing at the varsity level, possible college scholarship, or reaching the dream of professional sports.

Don’t Fear the Weight Room

Some women still fear the weight room.  The existing myth is that women who lift weights will end up with big bulky muscles and look too manly.  Ideas like this are giving resistance training a bad name.  We as trainers have to remember that men and women are physiologically different in the fact that the increase in muscle mass that is acquired by men is due to testosterone.  Yes, women secrete and deliver testosterone just like men do, but at much lower rates and volume.  This allows for women to build tone lean muscle and increase metabolism to enhance weight loss.

Understanding Patellofemoral Syndrome

Knee pain can be a debilitating problem, especially when an individual is not involved with a traumatic event or accident. One condition that I have seen more frequently in my practice as a physical therapist over the years is called patellofemoral syndrome (PFS).

Controlling Sodium Intake

Having an adequate amount of nutrients is essential to proper health, but in the case of sodium, it’s easy to have too much of a good thing. In a super-sized food culture, controlling sodium intake can be an uphill climb.

Core Stability

The core is where the most of the body’s power is derived. It provides the foundation for all movements of the arms and legs. The core must therefore be strong and be capable of dynamic flexibility and synergistic function in its movements in order to achieve maximum performance.

Dealing with Foot Surgery

Sooner or later, either you or your clients may require major foot surgery. That’s why it is important to know what foot surgery can involve and what post-operative exercises can be used.

Feeding the Follicles: Nutrition & Hair Loss

Short and sassy, long and silky, braids or dreadlocks or Mohawks. Regardless of the shade or color, our choice of hairstyle can speak volumes about our personalities. It may be surprising to note that our hair also has another voice, that which decries our overall health and well being.
