What Is Fitness?

Obviously, if someone hires a certified personal trainer they are intending to get fitness coaching. But what does fitness mean? The term is sometimes used synonymously with the word wellness, even though they are not the same. The World Health Organization defines health as a "state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity." Wellness is defined as a "a dynamic process of becoming aware of and making conscious choices toward a more balanced and healthy lifestyle."

Fitness Levels Decline With Too Much TV

High screen time equals lower fitness, even for active individuals.  A new study from the American College of Sports Medicine suggests that young adults who tune in to two hours or more of TV per day have poor muscular fitness. Obesity was another negative effect of too much tune time.

Pedometer Program Effects on Physical Activity Levels in Older Adults

Pedometers can be a useful tool for motivating people to be physically active, and their use and availability as an affordable tool have increased dramatically in recent years.  Newly released research in the December, 2009 issue of Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport (RQES) recommends peer-focused programs and access to healthcare providers for successful implementation of walking programs.

Fit Teenage Boys Are Smarter but Muscle Strength Isn't the Secret

In the first study to demonstrate a clear positive association between adolescent fitness and adult cognitive performance, Nancy Pedersen of the University of Southern California and colleagues in Sweden find that better cardiovascular health among teenage boys correlates to higher scores on a range of intelligence tests -- and more education and income later in life.

Wii Bit of Help For Fitness

A University of Wisconsin-La Crosse study found that the Nintendo video game system doesn’t do much to burn calories — perhaps just a wee bit.  Since its launch in 2007, Wii Fit has sold more than 21 million units and is now the third best-selling video game of all time.
